I love devotionals, I really do. Especially ones that give me a daily bite of nourishing bread that I can chew on during the day. I’m particularly enjoying a new devotional by Kathy Howard that was released this month. It’s called God is My Refuge and it’s a wonderful 12 week resource for encouragement and scripture memory.
We live in difficult times and we all struggle with issues like fear, discontentment, worry, or grief. For me it’s loneliness more than anything, mainly because we moved to Atlanta after living in Orlando for the last 20 years. I miss friendships and community. Yes, I’m making friends but it takes time to build relationships.
I was so moved by Kathy’s week long study on loneliness, it’s effects and remedies. She gently reminded me of a precious truth: “But there is one who will never leave us or forsake us. Absolutely nothing can separate you from Jesus and His love…..Paul acknowledged Christians will face hardship, loneliness and a multitude of other trials. Yet in the midst of them, we are not alone. All others may leave us but Jesus never will.”
Her words were like water to my parched and lonely soul. I think the best thing about God is my Refuge is that it reminds me of foundational truths, truths I may not have really thought about for a time. I hadn’t dealt with loneliness in years and until I read that chapter, I didn’t even realize that’s what was bothering me. I chalked up my gloomy attitude to cloudy, wintry days. But her words of wisdom, like the sun in a bright blue sky, brought the truth home and helped me understand what I was feeling and gave me concrete ways to pray about it.
Kathy covers 12 subjects with a week of study per subject, each subject being broken down into 5 days of devotions. In our time strapped world, I’m grateful they’re in bite-size amounts that won’t take oodles of time, yet each day is packed with wisdom. There’s a weekly Memory Verse and a Memory Minute with loads of helpful suggestions on how to make scripture memory easy. And don’t we all need to memorize more scripture???
Each day also has a Prayer Prompt to help you as you pray and a section called Reflect and Apply that asks pointed questions about the current subject to think about during the day.
The 12 chapters include: Trouble, Need, Loneliness, Illness, Fear, Broken Relationships, Uncertainty, Weariness, Worry, Temptation, Grief and Discontent.
Like me, I’m sure you are dealing with at least one of these areas at any given time. I don’t know anyone who isn’t dealing with at least one of these issues and, depending on the season of life you’re in, well, you might be facing 3 or 4 right now!
Kathy will encourage you, remind you what’s important and rebuild your foundation as you read God is My Refuge. She points us back to God and continually reminds us of His faithfulness and deep love for us. I’m so glad she was faithful to write this devotion for all of us. I know you will find her words encouraging and worth their weight in gold!
