Don’t you just love when God uses the circumstances of your life to smack you upside the head with His truth?
Yeah, me neither.
So, here’s the latest Godsmack in our lives: For the last week or so of December we noticed our bath water had an unsettling brown tinge to it. Since we’d recently drained our irrigation for the winter we thought maybe it was just a little residual dirt in the water line and it would soon disappear. Oh, foolish homeowners we, we were so wrong! It kept getting browner and browner.
So we did what any tech-savvy, computer literate adult would do. We googled.
“Why is the water in my bathtub brown”?
I don’t like what we found out, not one bit. Because more than likely, google told us, we needed a new hot water tank. Now, we just moved into this house 8 months ago and everything has worked perfectly. Well, except for the self-cleaning oven that I don’t think was ever self-cleaned in the 12 years this house was lived in. In fact, I filled my kitchen with smoke roasting a prime rib over Christmas. And I’m afraid of self-cleaning ovens because I set one on fire years ago on tour in San Francisco, but that’s another story!
Every article we read kept telling us we needed to replace our hot water tank. So, Mike found a good plumber and he agreed that indeed it was the issue. You should have seen the water, or should I say sludge, he drained out of that tank! Thick, brown and NASTY!
So we bit the bullet. The $1,000 bullet. And the tank was replaced yesterday. Are you kidding me? Not my favorite way to start the new year. But hey, at least now I can take a shower!
Coincidentally, (if you believe in coincidence which I don’t), starting on January 2 we were scheduled to begin a 3 day cleanse leading to a 10-day Daniel fast that will begin next week. We decided to do the cleanse and the fast for many reasons, not the least of which it’s one of the products we sell in our business and there was a company wide cleanse to join. But also for health, weight loss and clearing our heads to hear God’s plan and purpose for us for the coming year.
God, you have such a sense of humor! I’m sitting here thinking about it and You’re reminding me of the scripture that says, “But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.”1 Cor.15:46
Oh Thanks for the reminder that I’m full of……
…nasty brown water.
Don’t you love how He engineers circumstances in your life to illustrate truth?
It’s like God is giving Mike and I a vivid picture of where we’re at and where we need to be. I don’t want to be full of filthy, foul brown water! I want the clean and pure water of the word flowing freely through my life. Bringing life. Nourishing life. I want others to be refreshed when they’re around me.
I’m tired of the stale, brackish water pooling in my veins. Clearly, it’s time to clean the rust out of my hot water tank.
It’s exactly where we are right now, cleaning out the old, the rusty, the tired and dead and saturating our bodies, souls and spirits with health, vitality and His precious truth: we are to be “a vessel of honor, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work” 2 Timothy 2:21
O, prepare me Lord to honor you and do the work you’ve determined for me to do!
What about you? What has God smacked you with lately? Is it just me or does He do this with everyone, get their attention in the natural in order to teach them a principle in the spiritual? I’d love to hear your story and to pray for you in the new year.
Blessings friend – oh, and check your plumbing, k?
