Texting can take the form of pre-written messages or voice. I love that the watch comes with a number of pre-programmed messages, for example: “Yes,” “No,” “OK,” “I will call soon,” etc. In the app on the parent’s phone, they can be altered and new ones can be made, for a total of up to 20 messages of 25 or fewer characters each. Because of these premade texts, your child doesn’t have to worry about typing, autocorrect, or anything else. They can also record an audio clip to share if they want to convey an emotion that isn’t covered by the text—or their favorite emojis.
The Gabb Watch is the perfect first step in wearable smart tech for kids. It’s a great stand-alone phone with a unique phone number, maintaining a reliable parent-child connection with unlimited calling and messaging abilities through a custom contact list. You can pick up to 10 friends and family to include in their contacts. Also, all contacts communicate via calls and texts with the kid’s Gabb Watch, but unknown numbers are blocked. So, spam doesn’t get to your child, and no strangers either.
The Gabb Watch is also an active GPS tracking device and provides location services parents can track. Use this feature to set up predetermined “safe zones” — geographic locations designated as safe by the parents. For example: school, their grandparent’s home, or a best friend’s house. The watch can then send out alerts to the parent whenever their child moves outside of or enters a designated safe zone.
In an emergency, the Gabb Watch also has an SOS/emergency contact button. It’s on the side of the watch and a child simply holds the button down for 6 seconds to send an SOS call to their emergency contact.
The Gabb Watch is a great example of a safe, smartwatch for children not quite ready for a smartphone. It’s a wonderful alternative to allow parent and child connection without allowing complete internet access.
There’s a GabbGo game on the Gabb Watch that incentivizes physical activity and task management by rewarding every goal or task they finish with redeemable coins. The game has a digital pet kids care for during the day in exchange for coins. For instance, the built-in step counter lets kids set daily step count goals and earn coins when they achieve their goals.
Parents can customize a list of tasks for their child through the MyGabb app that the child must complete each day to earn the maximum number of coins. These coins are then redeemed for extra experiences on the GabbGo game.
This helps parents encourage their children to be active and help around the house. With GabbGo, kids finish their jobs and then ask for more chores. This is an amazing incentive tool giving kids a drive to achieve!
Gabb Watch is $99.99 (Only $74 with 25% off in January with my code: KATEB ) and requires a service plan: $9.99 a month or $12.99 a month. Or, $16.99 a month with no contract.
Here are 4 rules you might want to consider as your children begin using phones:
- No phones are allowed in the bedrooms at night.
- No calling or texting anyone who isn’t on their Contacts list. Mom and Dad approve of family and friends that they can put into their Contacts.
- No answering phone calls from anyone who isn’t on their Contacts list.
- Because Mom and Dad pay for the phone, it is their property. They have access to it at any time.
